WELCOME TO MATHEMATICS WITH MR. MIKE
This year at AIS we will be using the iMath 6/7 books.
The iMaths Student Book 6 and 7 topic pages are organised into Number, Algebra, Measurement, Chance and Data and Space.
Found within these books are engaging iMaths investigations that ask students to plan, question, apply their understanding, use technologies and reflect about real-life mathematical contexts.
Term 1 we will cover three topics with inquiry based investigations:
-> Number
-> Algebra
-> Chance and Data
Term 2 we will cover three topics with inquiry based investigations:
-->Number-Ratios, Proportions, Rates
-->Geometry and Space
-->Measurement
Assignments should be completed on time.The aim this term is to learn Science through laboratory experiences. Generally, each week about 60% of class time will be spent doing experiments or work related to experiments. There are a variety of activities: some will take a whole block, some can be done in a lesson and others will take a whole week.
HOMEWORK:
The homework will be done either in their math journal and/or their iMath Student Work Book. Please ensure that your child is completing all his/her homework on a daily basis.
Additional homework will be set when students are completing an assignment - this will be in the form of an investigation task.
Notes, examples and exercises should be read over every night to improve understanding.
I would encourage all students to revise their work every night, and to pay attention to hints and revision sheets that are distributed in class as well as the powerpoint lessons.
ASSESSMENT:
After each topic of inquiry, students will be given a test that will focus on questions from in class activities, daily assigned homework and the investigations. A marking rubric will be used to determine the students strengths and weaknesses based on the main essential learning outcomes. A letter grade will than be issued.
ADDITIONAL MATHEMATICAL SUPPORT:
Each students has been provided with a username and password to the Mathletics program. This program is highly recognized worldwide and is a powerful tool that engages students to enjoy, learn and become passionate about mathematics. Encourage your child to practice math on a daily basis.
On the Mathletics site (www.mathletics.com) the only available options are the topics under instruction. Students should be using the Mathletics site to revise, practice and improve their skills. All students are expected to log on to this site outside of school hours to practice topic skills.
Students should be working with mathletics on a daily basis at home or in the school environment.
